Psalm & Hymn Sing

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!

Psalm 100:1-2, ESV

On the third Sunday of the month, we gather at the church for a special time of singing psalms and hymns.

Why do you sing the Psalms? Aren’t contemporary songs good enough?

As Robert Letham says, “The Psalms are the word of God to man and the word of man in response. Fulfilled in Christ, Christ himself bases his message of grace upon them (Lk. 24:44-9). The Psalms are wide-ranging in content and immensely powerful” (source).

We believe the Psalms contain tremendous power to transform hearts through the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer. By singing the actual Word of God, we both rejoice in what Christ has done and hide his Word in our hearts. Since both are commanded in Scripture, the Psalm sing is an important part of our regular gatherings.

Do you use instruments or is it voices only?

We have two pianos in the sanctuary that are available during this time, if a player is present. More often than not, someone blesses the group by playing from the Psalter Hymnal. There may be times when we decide to try acapella, so it all depends!

What if I don’t know the tunes or the words?

Our Psalter Hymnal is available in almost every seat and many of the tunes are ones you have heard before or can pick up quickly. Some tunes may be new to us, as well, so we’ll all learn them together!

The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous.
