The standard Hebrew text divides the Psalms into five “books,” perhaps in imitation of the five books of the Pentateuch, with a final doxology at the end of each book. Book one covers Psalms 1-41.
In previous Psalms, the Psalmist has been enduring great struggles while waiting on the LORD’s answer. Now, in Psalm 40 the answer has come and learn how we are to respond to answered prayer: doxology, willing obedience, dedicated evangelism, revived worship, and continued dependence upon the LORD for future deliverance.
Because of the brevity of life, we are to live for the Lord.
1. The brevity of life in light of eternity. 2. The brevity of life in
the light of the reality of death.
