Marriage Ends, God’s Power Lasts

In Mark 12:18–27, the Sadducees, denying the resurrection, try to trap Jesus with a riddle: a woman marries seven brothers, each dying childless. In the resurrection, whose wife is she? Their question mocks the hope of life after death, assuming it contradicts God’s law. Jesus’ response unveils their error and God’s truth.

The Sadducees cite Levirate marriage (Deuteronomy 25:5–6), where a brother marries his deceased sibling’s widow to preserve the family name. They think resurrection creates chaos—multiple husbands in heaven. Jesus corrects them: “You know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.” Marriage, He explains, ends at death. In heaven, people are like angels, neither marrying nor given in marriage (Mark 12:25). Scriptures like Romans 7:2 and 1 Corinthians 7:39 confirm this: death annuls the marriage covenant, freeing the surviving spouse.

The Sadducees’ trap fails because they miss this biblical principle. Their hypothetical woman isn’t bound to any husband in the resurrection, as death severs earthly ties. Jesus reveals God’s power transcends human limits, sustaining life beyond the grave in a new, glorified state. Believers can trust His promise of resurrection, unshaken by earthly concerns.

Encouraging Thought: Rest in God’s power, which outlasts earthly bonds. Pray for faith to trust His promise of resurrection, finding peace in His eternal plan.
