Question 50: Christ’s Heavenly Session
Q50: Why is it added, and sits at the right hand of God?
A: Christ ascended into heaven to manifest himself there as Head of his church, through whom the Father governs all things.
This answer underscores Christ’s ascension as His enthronement at God’s right hand, signifying His supreme authority (Ephesians 1:20–23). As Head of the church, He intercedes for believers and governs creation, ensuring their protection. This truth comforts us, knowing our Savior reigns over all for our good.
Question 51: Benefits of Christ’s Rule
Q51: What does this glory of Christ, our Head, profit us?
A: First, that by his Holy Spirit he pours out heavenly gifts upon us, his members; then, that by his power he defends and preserves us against all enemies.
Christ’s heavenly reign brings tangible benefits: He sends the Holy Spirit to equip believers with gifts (Acts 1:8) and defends them against spiritual foes (Psalm 110:1). His intercession and providence assure salvation, strengthening faith in His sovereign care over every trial and enemy.
Question 52: Comfort in Christ’s Return
Q52: What comfort is it to you that Christ shall come to judge the living and the dead?
A: That in all my sorrows and persecutions, with uplifted head, I look for the very same person who before has offered himself for my sake to the judgment of God, and has removed all curse from me, to come as Judge from heaven; who shall cast all his and my enemies into everlasting condemnation, but shall take me with all his chosen ones to himself into heavenly glory and blessedness.
This answer highlights the hope of Christ’s return: He, who bore God’s judgment for believers, will judge justly, condemning evil and welcoming His people into glory (Revelation 22:20). This sustains perseverance, assuring victory over suffering and a future with Christ in eternal blessedness.
For Reflection
Lord’s Day 19 unveils Christ’s ascension as the anchor of our faith. His reign ensures the Spirit’s power and His return’s promise, echoing the resurrection hope in Christ. Take these truths to heart: pray for strength to trust His sovereign rule, depend on His Spirit, and await His glorious return.
