God’s Covenant Promises Life

Jesus, in Mark 12:18–27, confronts the Sadducees’ denial of resurrection with a powerful truth: God’s covenant ensures life beyond death. Quoting Exodus 3, He declares, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob… He is not God of the dead, but of the living” (Mark 12:26–27).

The Sadducees, rejecting resurrection, assume death ends God’s promises. Jesus points to God’s words at the burning bush, where He acts to fulfill His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob long after their deaths. This covenant promised them land, God’s presence, and a multitude of descendants (Genesis 12:7). If they were truly dead, the covenant would be void, but God’s ongoing fidelity shows they live before Him. His promise requires their bodily resurrection to dwell in the land, as Hebrews 11:13 notes they died awaiting God’s city.

Christ, the risen Word, guarantees this promise. Trust Him for eternal life.

Encouraging Thought: Rejoice in God’s unbreakable covenant. Pray to trust Christ, the resurrection and life, for your eternal hope.
